The Epic Poem: In June 1975
John Cary Mueller created
what he termed A Tribute to
the Games: An Epic Poem
Created Exclusively for the
Players in the Dan DeSantis
Invitational Hearts
Tournament. It is a
fascinating document, worthy
of the group that would keep
their tradition alive for many
decades. Click to Enlarge
Deal me a hand to shoot the moon with
Laugh while I eat the Queen of Spades.
If you’re smart you’ll put you money on me
‘cause winning is better than getting laid.
‘We’ve been playin’ hearts for seven years now.
Hope that we’ll be playin’ many more.
Don’t puff too hard on that pipe you’ve been passing
Or you may get stuck with that big black whore.”
“In three years the tourney moves to Vegas.
The place where the moneys’ flowin’ free.
If we play our cards right we will be together
Laying hearts in the White House in D.C.
Deal me a hand to shoot the moon with
Laugh while I eat the Queen of Spades.
If you’re smart you’ll put you money on me
‘cause winning is better than getting laid.

At La Costa California,
In a cottage near the ocean,
Came 13 noble gamblers
Ready to take part
For 11 years a’runnin’
They came from miles all over
To claim their worthy membership in
the tournament of Hearts.
“You gotta know how to lay ‘em,
Know how to play ‘em,
Know when to shoot the moon
Know what to pass
You never count your winnings,
Till you’re at the winners’ table
The Queen is always ready
So you better watch your ass!
Every player knows
The secret to survivin’
Is knowing to avoid the Hearts
And never eat the Queen,
Cause every hand’s a winner,
And every hand’s a loser
And winnin’ the DDIHT
Is everybody’s dream
But there lives a 14th player
That’s here at every tourney
That brings us all together
For playin’ cards each year
Whether winnin’ hearts or losin’
At the bums’ or winner’s table,
The great big card of friendship-
The reason why we’re here.

The games in Woodland Hills
Excitement and the thrills.
We’d soon be climbing hills
Oh thanks for them all.
…..Thanks for the memories
The cards that I was handed
The winner he was stranded
The ship was great, but Doc was late
And Joel got reprimanded
Oh thanks for them all
…Thanks for the memories
For 20 years less one
It’s been nothing but fun
The times were good, as well they
should
If only I’d have won
Oh thanks for them all.

The “creative” muscles of the participants in the DDIHT flexed through ongoing
songs, poems and the omnipresent Chairman’s newsletters. Dickie DeAngelo
regularly n the 70’s at local pizza parlors and David having founded the cover
band “Dave King & Asgard.”
A tournament staple was song parodies (long before Weird Al Yankovich arrived
on the pop culture scene) written and performed for the pleasure of the players.
Jack Mollar, a magna cum laude English Major from Stanford, frequently made
literary references in his letters to The Chairman and the boys, as well as
creating a number of tournament specific poems listed below.

The Epic Poem: A Real Classic

They’ve got to have heart
Years and years of silly hearts
When the room is filled with cussing and smoke
Liquor and coke
And farts….
They’ve got to have heart
Obnoxious weekends full of hearts
So loud and drunk they pick on Robair
Spin waiters in the air
Is that smart?
They’ve got to have heart
Why the hell do you play hearts?
You all think when you’re away that we beak
But please stay a week
Or more….
They’ve got to have heart
Hooray for 20 years of hearts
Since you’ve stayed together we are with you
Here in Poipu
THANK YOU!!”
The Wives’ Song (To the tune of “You’ve Gotta Have Heart”) Performed at #20

Even though he isn't smart
Always begs for money year after year
While we all just jeer
And fart.
The Chairman's got hope
Even though he is a dope
For thirty five years now we have all heard
'Final's my word'
So cope.
The Chairman’s got heart,
No he really isn’t smart
Oh he’s always boasting how he’s the man
His own biggest fan
And plays that part
Still the Chairman’s got heart….
A great golfer, the Chairman is not
A great hearts player, the Chairman is not
A great chairman, the Chairman is not
What is he not????
He’s not smart,
Even though he has got heart
Foolish Chairman Dan has finally retired
He usually get fired
After he starts.
So what the heck are we all here for?
The Chairman's swan song.
His chairmanship is finished
But the games go on
And we know its cause
He's got heart! He's got heart! He's got
Hearrrt!!

A clever and colorful invitation for the 12th Invitational Hearts Tournament at the Ojai Valley in June 1981. Each of the hearts around the edges lists the location of previous tournaments in such places as Lake Arrowhead, Las Vegas and La Costa. As the tournament became a regular event and the participants became more economically sound, the destinations got nicer. Click to Enlarge.

The 25th Annual DDIHT Invitation sports a very interesting layout from the newly named "Foolish Chairman." This June get together was slated for Phoenix, Arizona. In a bit a of levity the "Clever members, "Don't get a 'Heart' on yet!! We've got lots of hot plans..." Click to Enlarge

The First Invitation:
The invite to the first

and yet rather amusing.
This sense of humor
continues today and in
fact is a vital aspect.
