“Do what?”
“Well, if a girl wants to pet your ass, what’s in the way? A big old leather wallet. If a girl even wants to admire your ass, what’s in the
way? A big old leather wallet.”
“Well, I’ve worn a wallet in my back pocket all my life, and,... I,...”
“Fine, but you have such a great butt, it’s a shame to stick that big wallet on one of its cheeks.”
Then, winking at me. She turned, unlocked the door, and we went in.
I sat my guitar down, and she fixed us a couple of drinks, then we sat on the couch.
I said, “I see you still haven’t got my picture framed, although al least it’s still here.”
“Well, Marty saw it, and asked who you were. He was very jealous.”
I knew if he was jealous he had slept with her, but I bit my tongue and said instead of what I wanted to say, “ Jealous ? Why was he
jealous?”
“Levi, you’re a very handsome man.”
“Yeah right,” I guffawed, while I took a drink and lit a cigarette, inhaling deeply.
“No letters anymore, Levi?” she pouted.
“Hey. I write them at school, then stamp and send them from school. This is my spring break, so there won’t be any letters for awhile.”
“I love your letters, Levi. They’re beautiful, intense, romantic, strong, they’re,... they’re from your soul aren’t they , Levi ? You really do
love me, don’t you , Levi?”
“Duh!” I thought to myself.
Instead, I reached for her, then pulled her to me, buried my face in her neck, while my guitar fingers massaged her back, while
whispering in her ear, “I love you always, Mary Jane. I love you like the breath of life. I love you. I love you. I love you.”
“Oooh,...Levi,” she whispered back, “ I’ve missed you . I love you too Baby.”
Of course now that her kids were all gone, we could sleep in Mary Jane’s wonderful bed anytime we wanted.
