A Tip From Don:
No matter how
much you enjoy
cooking, one hour's
worth of work
should take one
hour-not two or
more-but the wrong
appliances will do
just that.  The choice
you make in your
appliance today can
limit or expand your
menu choices for the
life of your kitchen.

Don Silvers, Kitchen Designer, Chef,
Architect and Teacher Brings You...
As far as Don Silvers is concerned, the American kitchen is designed completely wrong,
in every sense of the word.  Silvers, a certified chef who taught cooking in the 1970s
and currently teaches residential kitchen design at UCLA, has been on a crusade for
decades to remake kitchens that will enhance food safety, save energy and make them
more convenient.

His first book,
Kitchen Design with Cooking in Mind, revised in 2005 with his new
partner Moorea Hoffman, lays out exactly how remodeled and customs kitchens should
be designed and the best appliances and configurations to be employed.  Then in 2006,
Hoffman and Silvers came out with a book that details the how major appliances should
be selected and placed within a proper configuration.

The Myths About Kitchens Which
Drive Don Silvers Crazy
The two most pervasive myths, besides the ones listed below, that disturb Don Silvers
the most are the "need for a triangle kitchen" and that the functionality of the kitchen
"doesn't matter" since people today "aren't cooking anyway."  Eager to bust these
myths wide open, Silvers has built his business on a client base that is very much
focused on cooking.

With a mission to educate and inform the consumer, designer, architect and appliance
sales professional to elevate the kitchen industry, here are some more myths that Don
Silvers is seeing to burst.
Myth 1: A Functional kitchen cannot be beautiful
Myth 2: Kitchen cabinets are more
important than appliances
Myth 3: Kitchen designers don't have to know how to cook
Myth 4: Americans don't like to cook
Myth 5: You can design a functional kitchen based on the
Kitchen Triangle or Zone design philosophies
Myth 6: Standard 24-inch deep counters are ergonomic
Myth 7: A good two-cook kitchen is different
than a one-cook kitchen

A Tip From Don Silvers:
Never defrost food,
especially meat, in a
microwave oven.
It may be fast, but is
also the fastest way to
ruin a good piece of
meat before you even
have a chance to cook it.
A Tip From
Don Silvers:
Appliances should
always be chosen
with maximum
requirements in
mind, never the
minimum.
Words to Cook By from Don Silvers
"If the kitchen is the heart of the home, then
the appliances are the heart of the kitchen, and
if cooking is a priority for you, then finding the
right kitchen designer means asking the right
questions. 'Do you cook?' should be the
first one. Whether it's a stovetop that doesn't
accommodate large enough pans, or a refrigerator
placed where it requires constant long walks, a
badly designed kitchen makes cooking a chore."
