Pat Keene of Keene Industries, Major Suppliers of Gold Dredging and Treasure Hunting Equipment "Roy Roush has created a book that certainly brings out a surprisingly important part of our history that very few people are aware of." President of the Los Angeles Historical Society "Well researched and written. This is the only book I know of that give any direct information, including maps, on these treasures. It will certainly be helpful to me." David Finner, Treasure Hunter and Diver and President of the California Wreck Divers Association "Roush's book is worth it's weight in gold and will open up an important new avenue for treasure hunting using this information as the 'Bible' for a guide." | "Nearly every man of influence in the South (and many a pretended Union man of the North) is a member of the Knights of the Golden Circle, and sworn, under penalty of assassination, to labor, in season and out of season, by fair means or foul, at all times, and on all occasions, for accomplishments of its objective." Charles G. Leyland, Continental Monthly, 1862 |
| The above quote bears witness to the very intense goals of this secret and very determined organization that has its roots in the early years of the United States under a different name. Roush wrote in Chapter One how the Knights of the Golden Circle "were formerly organized in 1835 as a secret organization by Senator John C. Calhoun, William Porcher and others, but their ideals had been going on for a number of years. The Knights of the Golden Circle were a direct descendent of other similar and secret societies, including one called The Lone Star. These men were southerners and their goal was the dissolution of the Union and to establish a Souther Empire, not a Confederacy or a Republic, but an Empire. It meant to achieve this purpose through a secret, large, and powerful organization, which indeed, they became." |
